Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for Hair

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a form of regenerative medicine inspired by our bodies' remarkable capability to heal itself. It maximizes the body's ability to heal by itself by amplifying one's natural growth factors.

Plasma is the medium for circulating red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets throughout your body. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are the cells that cause blood clots and play a vital role in the body's natural healing process.

Why PRP for hairloss?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an excellent treatment option for hair loss. Several scientifically-based studies have shown its efficacy in increasing hair count and thickness and fasten the hair cycle's growth phase.

Platelets in PRP therapy are five times more concentrated than regular blood. This platelet concentration is more efficient in assisting wound healing and tissue regrowth than the average platelet composition in the body. One of the theories that explain this is that when the concentrated platelets are injected deep into the scalp and reach the bottom of the hair follicle, it stimulates a particular group of cell populations named dermal papilla cells, which has a crucial role in hair formation, growth, and cycle itself.

For whom does PRP work?

Anyone experiencing hair loss is a good candidate for PRP treatments, but those with early hair loss tend to respond best. PRP is best used for those with Androgenic alopecia (AGA), a genetically determined type of hair thinning that typically occurs along the top of the head.

This hormone-related baldness equally affects males and females. This condition may start as hair loss from the top and front part of the head for men. While for women, this might look like a widening part with average hair thickness at the back of the head.

What can I expect?

Typically your session will take 30 minutes in office.

A small needle is used to draw your blood. Your blood is then processed using special tubing and a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets. The separated PRP will then be injected with typically 10-12 injections, using a tiny needle in your scalp.

Results

For best results, consistency is vital. Treatments are typically performed once a month for the first four months, and then "maintenance treatments" are performed every three to six months after that, depending on the individual patient's response and results. Results can be expected within two to three months.

The first result that patients usually notice is decreased hair shedding, followed by early regrowth and increased hair length. The general consensus is that receiving treatments every three to six months on a long-term basis is optimal for stimulating the growth factors and stem cells associated with regrowth and stopping hair fall out.
